Description

Learn about the two innovative methods the Houston Health Department lead program applies to garner quality lead unit referrals while building community capacity. The first method leverages funding to work in partnership with an embedded community group and a local hospital to sustainably address upstream health. The partnership focuses on reducing pollution in five census tracts, including lead in housing. The lead program community liaison trains volunteer community block captains to identify potential lead homes and provide “warm handoffs” to the lead program. The second method, in a partnership with a local university, entails use of public housing residents trained as community health workers to garner referrals from their neighborhood. The lead program community liaison trains the community health workers to work as a community liaison, and provides on the job shadowing opportunities with the goal of offering part time employment. Learn how to train the volunteers/public housing community health workers, how to manage the communication feedback loop and how community capacity has been increased.
